A few more comments this week and, as always, I’ll attempt to keep it brief. First, the show begins with the “Mission Accomplished” sound clip, where Bush appeared on an aircraft carrier on May 2 to announce that major combat operations in Iraq have ended and that the US and its allies had prevailed. Of course, the May 2 was in 2003 and, five years later, those words remain an outright lie.

Another anniversary of note is May 14, the 60th anniversary of Israel declaring its independence. I goofed a bit and said it was the 4th but, in any case, I played a few songs that represent a different point of view. Some might say a harsh point of view regarding Israel’s oppression of the Palestinian people. On the show, I say it’s an issue I try to avoid, that I’m not an expert and that, coming from a Jewish family, I don’t argue about it with family members because it’s unlikely I’d be able to change their minds. But I think there’s something to former President Jimmy Carter’s assessment that the situation in the occupied territories of the West Bank and Gaza amounts to apartheid. He writes, “Palestinians are deprived of basic human rights, their land has been occupied, then confiscated, then colonized by the Israeli settlers.” To say there are no easy answers is a gross understatement…
